The hotel

The Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives takes its name from the Maldivian word for crystal white sand, and it isn’t difficult to see why. Dhonveli is situated on a private island, surrounded by the sparkling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. A secluded tropical paradise, the resort combines authentic Maldivian design and décor with modern comforts, facilities and amenities, to offer guests the ultimate Maldivian holiday experience. Why not treat yourself to a stay in an Over Water Suite — resting over the shallow waters surrounding the island, they offer privacy and seclusion. They have a spacious bedroom and a living area with glass panel to watch the marine life below, whilst outside a private sun deck has steps directly down into the water.

We’ve just returned from a week at Cinnamon Dhonveli and overall it was a lovely, peaceful and relaxing holiday – exactly what we were looking for. The island itself is absolutely stunning: turquoise water, swaying palms, white sand, and those classic overwater villas and beach villas that make the Maldives look like a postcard. It really is as scenic as the photos suggest. The staff are the standout highlight – genuinely warm, smiley, and helpful. From the restaurant team, bar staff to the housekeeping everyone made us feel very welcome. The food was another big plus: breakfast, lunch and dinner were all excellent with plenty of variety, fresh fish, curries, pasta stations, and great desserts. We did the all-inclusive package and felt it was excellent value. A few honest downsides, because no review is complete without them: • If you’re coming primarily for snorkelling, you’ll probably want to consider a resort further away from Male as sadly the coral like in many areas is dying leading to a distinct lack of sea life. • Our water villa had a broken shower (very weak pressure, sometimes just a trickle). We reported it but it was never fixed during our stay, which was frustrating for the price point but not a deal breaker. On reflection we could have done more to make sure it was fixed for our stay by going to reception rather than speaking to the house keeping staff member. • Dolphin sunset cruise: skip it. Expensive. The dolphins were lovely when we found them, but the crew on the boat were keen to get back to the resort 20 mins before scheduled return and struggled to communicate (language barriers). Also you can see, if you’re lucky, the dolphins from the sunset and surf bars on the hotel grounds. In summary: Cinnamon Dhonveli is a solid, beautiful 4-star resort. It’s peaceful, the staff are fantastic, the food is great, and the island itself is picture-perfect. But it does feel like a 4-star property in some of the details. You definitely get what you pay for – if you go in with realistic expectations, you’ll have a wonderful, relaxing time. We still left happy and relaxed, and would consider returning if we wanted an uncomplicated, pretty Maldives escape without the 5-star price tag. Read less

We’ve recently returned from Cinnamon Dhonveli. The resort is immaculate, all the grounds are beautifully kept, all staff without exception were so friendly, professional and well skilled in their respective roles. The food was incredible - something for every palate. We tended to focus more on the excellent Maldivian/Indian/Sri Lankan dishes although anything and everything else we tried was equally delicious. Keshala definitely made our trip! At breakfast she would make me a bespoke vegetable juice, even noticing when I’d arrived in the dining room and getting one ready for me! We were asked what local food we enjoyed and then, by surprise, a beautiful Sri Lankan king prawn curry arrived - twice! I wish I could remember the name of our room attendant - he was outstanding. Hard working, thoughtful, conscientious and so pleasant and polite. As we had a junior beach suite we were able to use the Rehendi restaurant, bar and infinity pool - all excellent and never over-populated. The restaurant is managed by the superlative Srimanti. She is serene, very hands on too, but she glides around the restaurant with complete knowledge of exactly what is happening on each table. This lady could get a senior job in hospitality anywhere in the world. First of all we had the amazing Aiwan as our waiter - again, he almost knew what we were thinking, by arriving with refills of water, coffee or wine before we had even thought to order more. Then came Leem!! Mr Maldives! Laid-back Leem is absolutely hilarious in a very understated way, and, of course, excellent in anticipating and then delivering for his customers. Don’t miss Saha and his incredible live cooking station; or Khair for his. Both were incredible. Also - a shout out to the people with no name badges. The ladies who quietly sweep the paths of all the time. The gentlemen who rake the beach every morning - all of whom deliver to the same standard as the frontline staff. We had a couple of teething issues when we first arrived which were addressed and resolved with thorough care by the respective management reps. However, the overriding and unresolved issue is the occupation of the beach. We had a junior beach suite, with the beach being 10 steps from our decking. However! By 6am, the sunbeds in front of our place were already reserved towels on them. One morning I’d got up early - jet lag effect - at 5.45. I walked out with a coffee to watch the sunrise and popped our things on to the beds right outside our place - and 30 minutes later, after I’d showered, we came back out to discover a woman had moved our stuff and settled herself in. At 6.30am! From then on we had to set our alarm for 5.45 to get a sunbed 10 steps from our front door. This is not a holiday. My husband came back from lunch one day to see a stand up fight - yes! - between two men over sunbeds. Unbelievable, especially in the Maldives. Cinnamon as a group has to address this. Of course, the beach is available to all residents and it’s the only accessible beach on the island, hence its popularity. But surely there could be some kind of system to assure beach suite and bungalow residents of a place in front of their own accommodation? Other than that - the credit for our enjoyment of the holiday lies entirely due to all of the staff. You would be hard pressed to find any better. Our huge thanks to you all. Read less

We went here to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary and we enjoyed every moment of our stay! There is one particular employee who made our visit a 5-star experience and his name is Sattar! He should be the resident photographer especially for anyone looking to memorialize their visit to Cinnamon Dhonveli. Such a wonderful individual and the resort is lucky to have him as part of their team. Thank you so much for treating us so well, Sattar and team! Read less
