Image of the Tripadvisor rating Honest Family Review: Dreams Playa Mujeres Falls Short of 5-Star Expectations (But Has Some Bright Spots)

We just completed a seven-night stay at Dreams Playa Mujeres with our family of four (kids aged six and four), and here’s our full, honest take. Unfortunately, we were not impressed. Having stayed at Finest Playa Mujeres previously, the difference was stark—Dreams felt more like a 3.5 to 4-star experience, definitely not 5-star. Let’s start with the food. We had a couple great meals, but overall, it was hit-or-miss. The Seaside Grill on the last night was a standout—we enjoyed a seafood platter, clam chowder, grilled platter, and a delicious ribeye. The Mexican restaurant was authentic, with great tostadas and enchiladas. The Mediterranean was solid—those lamb chops were excellent. But many were disappointing. The French restaurant, hyped in other reviews, didn’t live up to the buzz. Even the French onion soup wasn’t prepared correctly—it came in a bread bowl with no gratin. The buffet was just okay, and we didn’t even try hibachi since it’s not our thing. Gaucho Grill, which aimed for a Brazilian steakhouse feel, fell flat. We had to ask repeatedly for meats, and the quality was unimpressive. Ironically, we had some fantastic meals at Secrets next door during lunch when the kids were at the kids’ club—better food and service overall. We didn’t get to try the Italian restaurant, which we heard good things about. Now, about the beach—covered in seaweed, so it wasn’t enjoyable. The pools were large and drinks good, but seating was a huge issue. Beyond pool chairs, there were no lounge areas. No sofas, no large couches—even in the lobby, you couldn’t sit while waiting for a taxi. A simple fix that would improve the experience. The biggest issue? The courtyard weddings. We were in building 8, partial ocean view, and it was extremely loud every night until 11 p.m. The music was blasting, and it really impacted our evenings. Originally, we faced the lazy river side, but the view wasn’t great. And unless you’re preferred, you’ll likely be in building 8—so the noise is a real factor. The property itself felt dated and needs renovation. We did enjoy the lush tropical plants—gorgeous palms—but without seating, you just walk through. On a positive note, the kids’ club was fantastic, and our kids loved it. The coffee shop and ice cream were great—pro tip: fresh mangos are only in the buffet, and if they’re not out, ask the server. They were delicious. One interesting experience: we stumbled into the Seaside Grill breakfast by accident, not realizing it was for preferred guests. They let us in, and we noticed freshly squeezed orange juice and premium coffee—it was amazing. We returned again, and they didn’t enforce the preferred rule—so that was a hidden perk. In summary, the resort needs major updating. Without better seating, quieter nights, and more consistent food, we wouldn’t return. We did enjoy Cancun outings, but as is, this wasn’t a luxury experience. Read less

Was super excited about this resort as my fiancé and I narrowed down to this Dreams Playa mujeres resort for our destination wedding. Luckily we decided to book a 4 day trip to check it out before booking or having our wedding here. I got so sick I almost had to go to the hospital and same for my fiance. We believe it was from the food or ice. I was hungry majority of the time but everything tasted bland or just not prepared well even at the dinner spots. The rooms and entire resort is very nice and pretty clean but the beach was a let down with the mountains of seaweed, which is obviously out of their control. Definitely a wedding focused resort as there was 2/3 every night (Saturday-Tuesday). We mentioned to the lobby reception about meeting with wedding coordinators but they were to busy to ever come and talk to us so that was all the sign I needed to not book it or want to come back. They also were pushy on selling a timeshare and even wanted us to edit our ID’s to change our age to 30+ to be able to “get a free massage” but had to tour the resort again to try and sell a timeshare. We declined and went on with our vacation. Was very disappointed in this resort. Will not be back or recommend for the price. Read less

We recently returned from an amazing spring break trip to Dreams Playa Mujeres in Cancun, Mexico, and our experience was outstanding from start to finish. We traveled with a large group, and the resort handled everything seamlessly. The property itself is absolutely beautiful, with well-maintained grounds that made it feel both relaxing and luxurious throughout our stay. The service was excellent across the board—friendly, attentive, and consistent. A special highlight for us was dining at Maris. The food there was fantastic, and our waiter, Samuel, truly made the experience exceptional. He was attentive, personable, and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great time. Service like his really stands out and makes a lasting impression. Overall, this resort exceeded our expectations, and we would highly recommend it—especially for families or large groups looking for a smooth, enjoyable vacation experience. We would definitely return! —A very happy guest Read less

I do not recommend this hotel. The food is poor, no matter which restaurant you try. We held my daughter's wedding here, and thankfully, it went smoothly, but don't assume it will be cheaper just because it's in Mexico. They are eager to extract every dollar from you. One person promises things just to get you to agree, and once you're there, you have to pay even more. Even after spending upwards of $30,000 USD, we tried to book an excursion and were given one price, only to be charged more after driving 30 minutes to the event. The rooms are unimpressive. Toilets clog, the AC turns off in the middle of the night, and the wifi barely works. I do not recommend this resort. Read less

Bellman Luviano, que pasa hermano! An excellent bellman and kind man. Excellent personality, professionalism, smile, kindness and help. He took us to our room, briefed us on the options in the room, and from our balcony, additional options on the premises. I got the chance to see him again when leaving, and he recognized me, smiled, we shook hands, and were able to chat some more. Thank you Jesus for such a great experience and Luviano played an unforgettable part in that as well. Thank you:) Apart from Luviano, also, one piece of feedback: we were not getting our bottled water replenished til 5 days into the stay. We had to keep finding water in different places and bringing it back. We didn't ask for more because we were always kind of waiting thinking indeed they'd be bringing us water. But to no avail. Also, phone was inoperable despite trying several options. It did work one time, via speaker phone, a disembodied voice just started speaking! They told us they could pick up our luggage at 940AM for our 10AM van ride out. They never came and again, no phone working, I couldnt call. Waiting in the hallway, didnt see anyone. My party started to worry, 60 of us, and I needed to get going. So I called wife and said come up and we gotta bring these bags out. We could have used one additional van for our party. This would probably fall on Nexus transport than the resort, but just for clarity. There was great confusion at departure time as our party of five had to squeeze in with the last van sitting there as there were no other vans no any coming. That stressed many out. I do not know what happened there. Quickly, the Secrets pool had some really sharp finish on the floor of pool. Playing football catch cut open two of my toes on both feet, making them bleed. I needed bandaids for one toe. Smooth out that finish and it should be good. Jesus in the giftshop was friendly, kind and helpful. Very personable and refreshing to chat with. Thank you brother. Also, more clear, larger signage to help direct us around is necessary. And, the putting greens, I definitely wanted to use them but couldnt find the sticks anywhere. At front desk? Better idea would be a wooden container right by them whereas to grab the sticks and quick do some putting. Would have been awesome. The pretzels in the Bella ice cream place were rock hard, those gotta go. And no cheese= no bueno. But the vanilla chocolate chip ice cream was the best! The sea weed was thick on the beach but Father God in charge of that one. Beautiful sunsets were so amazing, I loved it! The restaurant where they would cut the meet of the stick for you, some of those meats, like the ribs, were super hard to even bit and tear of meat. Hit or miss. The mens restroom by Secrets pool, often very wet floor, massive slip hazard. I know people out of the pool go in there. Maybe just have large porous rubber mats on the floor to allow the water to drain while giving people grip. My father in law fell outside of that area, and I had to take him into that bathroom and they were actually mopping as well, and the floor was standing water wet all over! If I hadnt gone in with him, I am guessing he would have fallen. Just wanted to be thorough. All in all, so excellent, awesome, fun, refreshing, and viva Mexico! The people here, the culture, kindness, respect, friendliness, is so lacking in the world, but appreciated here. Thank you all for your hard work, kind service, and for caring and giving a great effort. It added to the experience tremendously! Read less
