The hotel

Experience the two sides of Cancun in one luxurious hotel — the beauty of the beach and the life and soul of Mexico’s ultimate party mecca. Along a private sweep of sands, tiered lagoons spill down the centre of Dreams Playa Mujeres, with three main pools, a children’s pool and six hot tubs, a waterpark, and a mini-splash park... all making this the definitive aqua paradise. Relaxation also comes in the form of the adventures of the kids’ and teens’ clubs, and the indulgence of 10 restaurants, with 24-hour dining on the table. But this is Cancun, so the party’s never far. The fun of downtown’s approximately an hour away and, before you head out, you’ve got 13 bars and lounges to sip at, and live entertainment from stage shows to beach parties.

We had high hopes for this vacation as we had talked to people that had previously been. I am unsure if it is because Hyatt has taken over in the last few years or what, but MAN, it was just not a great experience. While it is all-inclusive they make you WORK for it. They do not automatically refill your fridge with water, soda, juice, beer, etc. each day. You have to call down and wait an hour... every. single. time. In order to get food by the pool you have to walk over to the burger place, wait for 30-40 minutes and then carry your food back to the pool. Also, they are out of French fries OFTEN (one of the 6 things on this menu). This is hard especially if you have small children and only two parents. I have never encountered this. If you want a reservation at Hibachi you have to get on your phone like you are trying to play the lottery and hit the button over and over and over. If you have more than 4 people (the max the app allows for one reservation) you have to have TWO people do the app at the EXACT same time to get the EXACT same reservation or you are SOL (the exact words from the concierge). While the rice and meat/veg were good from Hibachi, they do not give salad, soup, and you will definitely not get additional rice. The steakhouse.. WOOF. I would not go, service, ambience, food, just skip it. The kids pool, while super fun for kids literally has a cooler with bottles of water. That is the only refreshment you can get there. No service, nothing. SO if you want anything else, you need to walk all the way to your room (and hope you have something left in your fridge because again they will NOT restock without a call, and even then, it was hit or miss) OR you can walk over to the other pool bar which is not close. The rooms are pretty run down but the housekeeping does the best they can. The highlight honestly was the pool bartenders and waitstaff (for drinks only). Shoutout to Luis and Pedro! The breakfast buffet was fine but depending on the day, it depended on what was available. Majority of the servers in the breakfast buffet were good too. I think overall, there must be something going on because it really seems like someone high up is telling them to PINCH pennies, make it difficult for people to get "too much" from the all-inclusive, and to sell you on ANYTHING and EVERYTHING they can try to make you pay additional for. We have been to a lot of all-inclusives and I just truly could not believe this one has gone down hill so much. In sum, it is "all-inclusive" but they are going to MAKE YOU WORK FOR IT. Be prepared. The resort was very clean and updated. Staff was attentive and very helpful. Nightly entertainment was lacking and food was okay. Restaurants alternated when they were opened and all of them required men to wear collared shirts and closed toed shoes. Overall, I don’t feel the resort was worth the cost.
