Along a private sweep of sands, tiered lagoons spill down the centre of Dreams Playa Mujeres, with three main pools, a children’s pool and six hot tubs, a waterpark, and a mini-splash park... all making this the definitive aqua paradise. Relaxation also comes in the form of the adventures of the kids’ and teens’ clubs, and the indulgence of 10 restaurants, with 24-hour dining on the table. But this is Cancun, so the party’s never far. Overall this is a clean, modern hotel, but it's missing character and the service doesn't quite live up to the surroundings. The buffet was genuinely good, a great selection, though the desserts all tasted pretty similar despite looking different each night. The decor was colourful and modern. The à la carte restaurants were a real letdown by comparison, and our group agreed the buffet was the better option every time. You can't book the à la carte restaurants in advance, you go on a waitlist and get a buzzer instead. Wait times were usually around 25 minutes, though Maris and the Mediterranean restaurant moved faster. My guess is the delays are more about staffing than actual capacity. The restaurants themselves feel like large, under decorated spaces — nothing to make them feel intimate, so the atmosphere falls flat. The food was fine but unremarkable, which isn't really what you'd expect. The wine list is very limited too, whether you're buying by the glass or on the inclusive package. Service was friendly, but the restaurant staff seemed overstretched and the polish wasn't quite there. I will say, we were a large group o 13 and we were able to be seated together which was really appreciated. The lobby area comes alive at night, good cocktails, reasonable service, and a nice outdoor bar area. The pools are lovely, but the pool bars close around 6pm - right when you'd actually want a drink as it cools down. The beach is pretty, although there's a fair amount of seaweed in this stretch (not the hotel's fault). The cabanas are tucked behind a bush so you can't actually see the sea, and the loungers closer to the water are the plastic kind. The beach bar is decent but the food is limited to mostly American fast food. Overall, the beach area could use a bit more thought and curation. We really enjoyed the Lazy River area, which requires the preferred access upgrade over standard. It was quiet, easy to grab a bed, and just a relaxing spot. There's a small bar there serving non alcoholic drinks, but no food - it would be a nice addition. The spa was great. Good service, with massages around $125 USD. They even offer kids' massages (with a chaperone), which was a real treat for my kids. The facilities themselves are limited, but the outdoor pool area is pretty and includes a sauna and steam room. For families: my kids used the teen club mainly for Xbox rather than any organised activities. The outdoor facilities are at the back of the hotel with no shade, so they got too hot and my kids weren't keen on spending time there. On the plus side, the kids loved being able to roam the resort independently, and they went jet skiing, booked directly with vendors on the beach. They also loved being able to get ice cream when they wanted and be seated at the buffet on their own (aged 11-14) One tip for non-Americans: tipping is the norm here, so bring some USD cash with you. We booked transfers through Amstar, which were reliable, but transport in general is pricey and Ubers seem hard to come by. If you're planning to take a lot of trips, it's probably worth staying closer to Cancun instead. I also found the excursion advice confusing — you get offered several options at different rates, and it often feels like the person selling has their own agenda rather than matching what you actually asked for. It might be worth booking excursions independently, since Amstar seems to just resell through providers like Cancun Adventures anyway. We hired a Caterman for the day to Isla Mujeres (which was packed - and I wouldn't recommend the golf cart hire - there's not much to see and the exhaust fumes are horrible). We also went on a 4 cenote trip (Xcaret) which was well run and well worth it for older kids and adults. The staff at the buffet (World Cafe) were great, clearly busy but always doing their best, though drinks service felt understaffed at peak times. Self-serve soft drinks would go a long way here. In summary, Dreams is a reasonable stay if you get a reasonable price, but don't expect much charm, or truly memorable experience outside of making our own memories. As a group we had a good time overall all, and the resort accommodated us pretty well, but there's nothing that compelling to make we want to return to this particular resort. Read less

Lots to do at the resort and the service was excellent! Ricardo got the group involved in daily activities and even got both of my 85 year old parents dancing on the night of their anniversary - thank you for that special memory! We all had access to the Preferred Club which included the lounge where we gathered each evening to drink the beautiful and delicious drinks made by Raul. I also want to send a thank you out to Gabriella who served us drinks down at the beach Bali Beds and by the pools each day. Checking out the Secrets resort next door was fun and we enjoyed their tequila tasting and finding the Secret night club. The dinners at Dreams were all delicious and my husband is still talking about the lamb chop at Mezes. Thank you Dreams for this wonderful holiday! Read less

Our room was not cleaned to the standard we expected, especially considering the cost of the resort. Cleanliness should reflect the premium price guests are paying. Room service was very good, but only for breakfast. The lunch, however, was disappointing. The food appeared to be hastily prepared, was sloppily plated, and lacked quality. Our biggest disappointment was our experience with the French restaurant, L'Etoile. My husband and I were looking forward to dining there during our stay. On our first attempt, we were turned away because my husband was not wearing a collared shirt. The following evening, we returned with him wearing a collared shirt and nice dress shorts, only to be turned away again because he was not wearing slacks. What made this especially frustrating was that the previous evening we had seen another gentleman dining in the restaurant wearing a collared polo shirt and beach shorts. Although we did not make an issue of it at the time, the inconsistent enforcement of the dress code left us feeling disappointed and treated unfairly. We ended up at Tres Colores (Mexican) which gave us excellent service and food as well as Fusion (Hibachi) the following evening. Finally, requiring such a strict dress code at an all-inclusive resort seems unreasonable. Many guests are on vacation in a hot, humid climate, attending events such as weddings, and expect a more relaxed atmosphere. While we understand the desire to maintain a certain dining experience, the policy and especially its inconsistent enforcement took away from what should have been an enjoyable part of our vacation. We still managed to enjoy ourselves and was able to be a part of a beautiful wedding ceremony. Read less
