The hotel

Mango Bay is in a great location on a beautiful beach on the west coast. We love it because it's a small, friendly hotel that exudes bajan charm. The restaurants, bars and boutiques of fashionable Holetown St. James, along with the Limegrove Lifestyle complex, are just footsteps away - and the complimentary catamaran cruise allows you to explore even more that the island has to offer.

This was our 3rd stay at Mango Bay and we enjoyed it once again. We were in a 3rd floor superior room overlooking the pool. It was my husbands birthday and he received a bottle of bubbly in the room and a birthday card message and also a lovely printed birthday menu on the table that evening. We also had a welcome back card and another bottle of bubbly on arrival which was nice. It was nice to be welcomed back from the staff that remembered us along with hugs from Raydon and Damien who provided us with drinks and also a mention to Dale on the bar who also remembered us. Take some cat treats when you go, they come every night for them and there’s one that will eat them out of your hand and even give you a paw for them. Housekeeping were very good and kept the room clean and tidy and the evening turn down was a nice thought. We had a slight problem with the air conditioning leaking which we reported to reception and within 10 minutes maintenance were there to sort it. We enjoyed the lovely walks on the beach both ways you can walk a long way with bars to call in. We also bumped into Marvin with the glass bottom boat we had used in previous years and were once again welcomed back. The Bajan people are some of the nicest you will meet. I took plenty of mosquito repellent but didn’t need much, I got about 4 bites and husband maybe 2. We did keep the mosquito bracelets on most of the time just in case. There’s a new hotel being built next door and just putting the foundations in so there was a bit of noise but not too disturbing and could only hear it on the beach. Only problem we spotted and a few others too, a group of 6 came and were a bit loud and drinking a lot but have a feeling they might have been warned as they did quieten down. It’s a small quiet hotel and not the sort of people they usually get. The evening entertainment was really good as was the Saturday Sundown and Managers Cocktail drinks. The chap on stilts doing fire eating was amazing! Watch out also for Mr Impact, great entertainer. We enjoyed the food preferring the buffet option so we could have just a little of everything. Would we recommend the hotel, yes. Read less

Cons The one thing that we never saw in any of the reviews is that there’s construction right next to the beach, which makes it very, very loud.. 24/7 . Food not great… Employees look like they'd rather be somewhere else. No smiles, no warmth and no efficiency . Short staffed. Even the front desk lady when we checked in wasnt very nice…. Have to get up early to get a seat at the beach…rooms need to be updated….. Pros .. Get a beachfront room facing the beach much quieter. People visiting were great all really nice. Best day is when we left the hotel snd went with friends out to see the island…. Read less

Following a 9 hour flight from Gatwick London we arrived at the mango bay hotel at approx. 18.00 local time.on Sunday the 23rd February. We were shown to room 403. The room was located on a first floor balcony which happened to back onto a side street which we later found was venue for a weekly karaoke night. This turned out to be a nightmare with an absolute racket going on till 01.30 on the Monday morning, with loud noise going on until approx 01.30 (05.30) uk time. My wife and I after spending a sleepless night went down for breakfast. At breakfast we were requested to book both lunch and evening meals, these proved to be slightly ambitious, many occasions we were requested to wait for a table to become available. Following being served the starters we waited approx 1 hour for the main meal to be served, guests on the next table were brought their main course before receiving their starters, this was subsequently served with a warning that the plates were very hot. In the main the housekeeping was friendly and efficient, however we were plagued by mosquitoes during the night even after reporting this problem to the staff, and in the morning being covered in mosquito bites, Needless to say we will not visit this hotel again. Appalling service in the restaurant. Items slammed down. My husband had plates piles in front of him and then a bread basket inverted to be carried away. He made the mistake of asking for a glass of rose to be told. ‘ I can’t do everything’ The breakfast on a Sunday was just pure comedy. There was literally no top ups. If you dared to arrive after 0830 the OJ was empty, the fruit was empty the bacon was empty. Despite how often you asked nothing was done. The people who issue the towels are like the Gestapo. My husband was interrogated because the previous night he could only pick up one fresh towel so when he went to get mine the next day he was told that towels had already been allotted for our room. Top Tip, take your own towels. Only one per person per day allowed. The rudeness at the front desk was just breathtaking in its disregard and careless attitude. There were a few shining lights amongst the staff. Isabel to name one. An older gentleman in the restaurant was absolutely lovely , his name began with a G. The tables in the evening around the area where the entertainment happened never had the dirty glasses and beer bottle cleared away through the evening. I used to do it myself so we could sit down after dinner at a cleanish table. I was so desperately disappointed in my holiday. The pool was shallow, no deep end here. The mattresses on sunbeds were left out in the rain and on two days I spent the whole day soggy due the aforementioned draconian one towel policy combined with a saturated sun bed. There are twenty sunbeds at the maximum around the one pool and not one is peaceful but a constant thoroughfare. Other reviews mentioned the noise and though this is true We didnt mind this as much as the dismissive careless service. It made us so miserable that we used to go to bed at 9pm most nights. A lunch and dinner out were the highlights of our trip. We have spent many years travelling all over the Caribbean and I have never left a bad review for any of our previous trips. Mango Bay needs to stop relying on previous customers because many we spoke to had huge concerns that they werent receiving value for money. The basics should be addressed such as a warm welcome. To be honest half the time I was too scared to ask for anything either at the front desk or while trying to book lunch and dinner. The towel situation plus minimal pool sunbeds led to an 0600 alarm for most of our holiday. You snooze you lose. There was no leeway. Im still getting over the feeling of sadness when I realise we had saved up and spent thousands of pounds for a less than premium experience. Read less

This was our first trip on west coast as normally stay on the south. We had booked a superior room & upon check in got told we had an upgraded ocean view view free of charge brilliant views. Cara who checked us in had the most infectious smile & giggles all the time, we landed at 1500 was in our room & unpacked by 1630. Room was good size loads of space for clothes bathroom was a bit dated but done the job. Food was a mix of buffets & waiter service plenty of choice & of a good standard I heard a lot of people say service was slow but remember you are in Barbados & there is no rush with anything great way of life. There is just the one bar here but never a struggle to get a drink which was again of a good standard lovely staff behind the bar especially Shilrlene Damien & the brilliant hard working Rayden. The watersport lads start putting out the subbed & brollys about 6 each day they work hard & if you talk to them you will find out how humble they are all great lads & will always find you a space & bed. Best of all at this hotel is the location in Holetown plenty of bars around & limegrove shopping then you have the amazing beach with great walks & the most amazing sunsets. It is rated a 4 star but personally I would say a good 3 star with the most amazing of staff thank you for a fantastic holiday .There is building work going on next door with a couple of cranes working but it did not really impact on us we were on the beach every day, the hotel also offers a free two hour catamaran trip on a Wednesday & Saturday nice touch. If you have any questions feel free to ask away.
