The hotel

In the Maldivian language of Dhivehi, ‘Lobi’ means love and ‘Gili’ means island, so therefore Lobigili is, in essence, the island of love. If you’re looking for a romantic trip for two, this is it. Set in an idyllic location with white sandy beaches and sparkling waters, the adult-only OBLU SELECT Lobigili offers some experiences to make this a trip you will never forget. The largest underwater restaurant in the Maldives, Only BLU offers modern gourmet cuisine with a front row seat to the coral reef – and it’s included in the excellent Lobi Plan. This indulgent plan also includes a complimentary sunset fishing trip and a guided snorkelling trip, so you’ll get to see the best of the island and it’s surroundings after that relax with the included spa treatments. Both the beachfront and over water suites have a modern feel with semi open-air bathrooms and walk-in wardrobes, why not upgrade to the water pool villa for that added luxury of a private infinity pool overlooking the lagoon.

Where is it

Located on the island of Lobigili, just 15 minutes North West of Male International Airport by boat. Complimentary speedboat transfer to and from Malé International Airport.

68 stylishly designed villas, all with air-conditioning, tea/coffee-making facilities, iron and ironing board, complimentary mini-bar replenished daily, robe and slippers, hairdryer, flat-screen LCD TV, in-room safe, separate bath tub and rain shower, and complimentary WiFi access. All villas have 1 king-size bed, sleeping 2 adults.

SunNest Beach Pool Villas feature an open air bathroom, cosy veranda, walk-in wardrobe, and a private pool just steps from the beach.

All Inclusive - The Lobi Plan: includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner served at Ylang-Ylang. Selection of freshly prepared local snacks served between 4:00-6:00pm at West Beach Bar. One a la carte fine dining experience per guest per each four nights stayed at Only BLU (pre-booking required, subject to availability). One dining experience per guest per each four nights stayed at Gaadiya 17 (pre-booking required). Unlimited orders from a wide selection of liquor and premium wines at Ylang Ylang and West Beach Bar, and unlimited orders of signature cocktails from a selected list at The West Beach Bar. Soft drinks, mineralised water, and an assortment of tea and coffee available at all outlets. Complimentary use of snorkelling equipment throughout the stay. Complimentary selection of non-motorised water sports. One complimentary sunset fishing trip per guest per stay (weather permitting). One complimentary snorkelling guide trip per guest per stay (weather permitting). Nest Water Villas are situated over the ocean with direct lagoon access, an outdoor shower, and a private overwater hammock.

Arrive at the hotel to be met by your hostess and a sax player, playing you across the jetty to the bar, preceding a full tour of the island on a “golf cart”. We had a beach room. Spacious and clean, but with limited hanging space. The bathroom is outside, meaning washing, showering and going to the loo is done with a feeling of vulnerability and intense heat. Very quiet, but there are things to do just by looking at the app. View your planner daily to remind yourself what you decided to do. Cookery classes, a massage, tennis, towel art, spa sound therapy classes, cocktail making, make your own body scrub or oils. Paddle boarding or snorkelling. Free sunset cruise, reef snorkelling or fishing. Go to the well equipped air conditioned gym. All free with all equipment provided. Or, just sit by the pool and enjoy the beverages and maybe a delicious “hi-tea”. The staff are exemplary. Whether the staff in the restaurants and bar or the gardeners. They all greet you with a broad, happy smile and a cheery hello. They are a very happy family and it shows. Food is excellent all round. The chef’s, cooking just an omelette for breakfast or Lobster Thermidor for dinner need special praise. They are artists. The underwater restaurant is incredible. 6m below the waterline, you literally are eating in a fish tank, with the sea creatures just swimming by you. An amazing feat of engineering with the chefs providing amazing food to match the scenery and ambience. Listen out for the waitresses shouting “shark” to make sure guests get their cameras out in time. These are all the good things. The not so good would be: the pool DJ. Loud and unnecessary. One day she began hoovering her decks during a presentation on body scrub, being given by a woman who spoke like a church mouse. No consideration. Very selfish. I was also asked to complete an internal online hotel review while checking out with our hostess. This made me feel extremely uncomfortable, being put under pressure to complete it before we left. It seemed not to be an option. Even asking to quote staff names. I could have provided them with an inventory of names of staff to praise as they are all amazing. Insects! Take a repellent. My Mrs was eaten alive in the second week. Maybe sand mites? Mosquitoes? Who knows. Read less
