OBLU SELECT Sangeli

Maldives, Indian Ocean

Star rating

The hotel

They dare to be different on Sangeli island, on Malé Atoll’s north-west perimeter — where creative minds have concocted a dazzling design hotel that’s a far cry from the simplistic rustic retreats of ‘old Maldives’. Edgy features make it feel fabulously fresh and innovative, but there’s still a nod to authentic Maldives in your super-spacious beach-skimming villa. Sangeli is home to it's very own house reef, easily accessible from both the beach and your stunning water villa. The main Sangeli Island and the smaller adults-only island, One Banyan island, are linked by a string of overwater villas. At One Banyan Island adults can enjoy the adult only infinity pool, plus an  a la carte lunch here during the day serving light meals. Here you will also find the exclusive honeymoon select ocean villas and have your very own butler and floating breakfast included! You can amble between the spa, overwater gym, dining venues and recreation and water sports hubs at your leisure. And, the premium all-inclusive Serenity Plan provides complimentary treats along the way, including a daily mini-bar refill, two fine dining experiences a week, unlimited drinks, one 45 minute spa treatment for every 4 night stay per couple and selected excursions, activities and water sports. We recommend a drink in the Rock Sunset Bar at the western tip of the island, the perfect spot to enjoy magical sunsets with a cocktail in hand, all whilst being serenaded by the incredibly talented resident jazz musician!

The resort was perfect because we could enjoy both the beautiful lagoon and the overwater environment. The view was stunning, and we could see so many stars at night — it felt truly magical. We also noticed many families enjoying their vacations here, and it made us think that we would love to come back again in the future with our family. Highly recommended for both couples and families! Read less

The worst hotel service ever among the 4 island I stayed. There is no island tour and facility briefing after check-in, the host only introduce a spot we came by it while he walked us to the room. No comprehensive room facility introduction as well. While it feels modern to look up information via hotel app. But the user experience in the app is bad. Example 1: it took 5 clicks to navigate what is the open/close time of a restaurant (provided you have the right guess what is the top level menu to click). Example 2: No pin to zoom to view the island map and max scale is still small. Far worse that handing out information via messaging app. The close time of swimming pool is said to be 19:00 but you will be asked for get out the pool at 18:00 because they need to add chemical now. Buggy service is slow, on avg you need to wait 10+ min for it to come after you call reception. Buggy is only visible in living area, if you go deeper into the island, you have to walk back, because you can not call from the app. WIFI coverage is poor, you usually got no signal just a few meters walks from the major facilities. A risk if you had an accident, you cannot call for help via WIFI in blind spots. Not sure if because it is a artificial island, the sea is not calm even under light wind. When it is raining is basically not possible to stay in the beach, you can go nowhere but stay in your room or bar, no other rainy day friendly facility you can go. (e.g pool shuts down at 19:00, kids zone shuts down at 18:00) No coordination between facilities. One of our activity was cancel due to weather conduction and was re-scheduled to next day(no communication on time) where it conflicted with another confirmed activity. When we called reception to resolve the conflicting schedule, we were informed to contacting the facility directly ourselves to see any possibility. Poor departure arrangement. We were arranged to leave the island at 7:30 am, 5 hours before flight schedule and check-out time was 7:00, hence max 20 mins for breakfast, but when we request to take-way, we were informed that we need to request it previous day, however this is not written in the departure handout. In the end we have to rush for a meal. (funny story, before checkout we had been kicked off from WIFI network already, no room login is possible, you have to connect a temp guest) In summary, it is a poor service hotel that sit on a NOT very scenic artificial island, if wish to have a "wow" moment in Maldives, please look into other islands. I’ve visited four different resorts in the Maldives, but this was the first one that genuinely left me disappointed. The scenery and service were so poor that if this had been my first trip, I probably wouldn’t want to return to the Maldives at all. This place is single-handedly damaging the reputation of the destination. Scenery & Island Feel This is a heavily man-made/artificial island, and it shows. The beach is tiny and cramped. Although the island itself is quite large, most of it is overgrown jungle rather than the classic white-sand paradise you expect. Ugly concrete groynes jut out across the beach, completely ruining the view. Sun loungers are packed so tightly that there’s almost no space to walk or simply enjoy the sand. We had two days of rain and overcast grey skies, which didn’t help, but even so, the sea here doesn’t feel like the real Maldives I’ve seen on other islands. The water lacks that signature turquoise clarity. If pristine beaches and that “wow” factor are what you’re coming for, look elsewhere. Food .The food is edible and you won’t go hungry, but it’s nothing special. Heavy on curries, with some pasta, burgers, and noodle soup at lunch. Limited variety overall. Desserts were decent and drinks were okay, but the mocktails were overly sweet. Avoid the “innovative” cocktails — they were pretty bad. Snorkelling This was probably the highlight. The house reef from the water villas has decent fish life, and the best spot is the deep channel near the honeymoon suites (where they also take you for the complimentary snorkel trip). We saw sharks and turtles there. However, most of the coral is artificially planted and quite boring. The resort constantly broadcasts on the TV how they’re “saving the environment” by planting coral and supporting local crafts — which feels pretty hypocritical when they’ve built such a large artificial island in the first place. Service – the biggest letdown I’m generally not fussy about service, but this was shockingly bad. From check-in, the butler rushed us through a super-fast briefing and immediately pushed us to lunch without offering a proper island tour. The app said the pool was open 7am–7pm; in reality it’s 9am–6pm. Staff started aggressively chasing people out at 6pm and sprinkling disinfectant, especially on the cloudy days when there was nothing else to do. Buggy service is unreliable — you’ll wait 20+ minutes every time. On our departure day, they cut our Wi-Fi before we even checked out. When we complained, the response was a half-hearted “sorry.” Most staff were unenthusiastic and rarely greeted guests. One Indian server at Just Grill was noticeably unfriendly and impatient, especially with children’s orders. There’s also a strong sewage/pig-farm smell on the path to Rock Bar. I really hope future visitors read this before booking. 一句话总结:三亚贵替,谁选谁踩雷。劝退各位,选别的岛吧 Read less

Still awaiting refund for unused days that we had to pay for due to a cancelled flight. We’ve been waiting almost 2 months, and can’t get a straight answer!
