The hotel

They dare to be different on Sangeli island, on Malé Atoll’s north-west perimeter — where creative minds have concocted a dazzling design hotel that’s a far cry from the simplistic rustic retreats of ‘old Maldives’. Edgy features make it feel fabulously fresh and innovative, but there’s still a nod to authentic Maldives in your super-spacious beach-skimming villa. The main Sangeli Island and the smaller adults-only island, One Banyan, are linked by a string of overwater villas, plus the exclusive honeymoon select ocean villas— you can amble between the spa, gym, dining venues and recreation and water sports hubs at your leisure. And, the premium all-inclusive Serenity Plan provides complimentary treats along the way, including a daily mini-bar refill, two fine dining experiences a week, unlimited drinks, one 45 minute spa treatment for every 4 night stay per couple and selected excursions, activities and water sports.

Where is it

On the north-western edge of the Malé Atoll, this resort is set over two small islands linked by a curve of water villas, with the spa and two restaurants on the smaller island, and most other amenities on the larger island. Complimentary speedboat transfer to and from Malé International Airport: 50 minutes, operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. On arrival day, guests will be met by representatives at the airport and escorted to the speedboat jetty. A boat host will be on hand to ensure a smooth journey.

137 villas and suites, all with air-conditioning, safe, tea/coffee-making facilities, hairdryer, complimentary WiFi access, complimentary mini-bar replenished daily, iron and ironing board, mini bar, flat-screen LCD TV, bathrobe, and slippers.

Beach Villas are 81m² standalone villas facing the lagoons, and have a semi open-air bathroom, direct beach access, and 1 king-size bed, sleeping maximum 3 adults.

Serenity Plan: All-Inclusive of: buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner at The Courtyard, plus one visit included at either JustWok or Just Grill, for lunch or dinner, for a one to three-night stay (two visits included, for a four to seven-night stay; three visits included, for an eight to 11-night stay; four visits included for a 12-night stay and above. Pre-booking required, as per availability. Children under 16 years can dine at specialty restaurants during dinner only). Freshly prepared local afternoon snacks at the Hedhikka Hut. A selection of drinks including regular international brands spirits, wines, and beers, cocktails, mocktails, soft drinks, mineral water, tea and coffee from The Courtyard, JustWok, Just Grill, The Sangs Bar, One Banyan Bar, At The Rock Sunset Bar open from 5-7pm enjoy the cocktail of the day, wine, beer and soft drinks. In-room mini-bar (beer, wine, soft drinks and snacks, replenished once per day). Water sports including stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, pedalo rental and snorkelling equipment. One complimentary sunset fishing trip per stay (weather permitting) and one complimentary excursion per stay from a selection. Entertainment (live music three times a week, DJ twice a week). Weekly, seasonal group activities, including yoga and pilates. Kids’ club. One 45-minute spa treatment pp for every 4-7 night stay. Two 45-minute spa treatments pp for every 8-11 night stay. Three 45-minute spa treatments pp for every 12-15 nights stay. Unlimited access to Overwater fitness centre.

Beach Villas with Pool feature a 13m² private plunge pool, and direct beach access ,with 1 king-size bed, sleeping maximum 3 adults.

Water Villas are set over the ocean with direct access to the house reef, ocean view, bathtub and rain shower, private sundeck with loungers, and 1 king-size bed, sleeping maximum 2 adults.

Water Villas with pool are the same as water villas, with direct access to the lagoon, with the addition of an outdoor bed and private pool, featuring 1 king-size bed, sleeping 2 adults.

Honeymoon Select Ocean Villas are intimate over water villas with a private pool, sunset views, and an outdoor shower, sleeping maximum 2 adults. These villas include direct check-in at your villa, welcome bottle of champagne with canapés and fruit platter, dine-around in all three restaurants throughout the stay, one couples massage per stay (for stays of 4 nights or more), special evening turn-down service, dedicated butler service, and in-villa breakfast once during stay.

Two Bedroom Beach Pool Suites feature two open-air bathrooms, spacious living area, direct beach access, veranda with comfy daybed, and a private pool. One master bedroom has 1 king-size bed, with the secondary bedroom featuring twin beds, sleeping maximum 4 adults and 2 children.

3 restaurants: The Courtyard (all-day dining menu with buffet, live cooking stations, and theme nights), JustWok (fine-dining, contemporary Pan-Asian menu, outdoor dining area), Just Grill (fine dining seafood and meat grill menu, open for lunch and dinner). The Sangs pool bar (with fresh local afternoon snacks at the Hedhikaa Hut)

We spent a week at Sengeli as a family with our 2 adult children. It was a week to remember forever. The service and attention to detail was excellent. On arrival at the airport in Male we were greeted and taken on a small boat to the island to be met with a traditional welcome and sparkling wine. We felt taken care of at all times, the staff were outstanding and went over and above any normal service. The restaurant staff and chefs were so very lovely and kind. The food was delicious with a huge variety at every meal and being vegetarian I have never had so much choice anywhere I have stayed. Our beach villa with a pool was luxurious yet homely, the outside bathroom stunning and the beds very comfortable. Having the beach on the doorstep was a magical experience to wake up to every morning. The Resort never felt crowed in any way even though it was almost full occupancy while we were there.another thing you are paying for the space and tranquility. The cocktails and drinks in the bar were well made and the selection of wines impressive. We took advantage of the Adults only pool one day with is very relaxing and very attentive bar staff are always on hand to offer another drink. The 2 evenings we dined in the speciality restaurants were a highlight. The tasting menu is incredible quality for an all inclusive resort and our extra special evening dining under the stars with fairy lights thanks to the food and beverage and restaurant managers brought me to tears. As did our final evening in the Buffet restaurant when the chef and many of the staff we had been lucky enough to meet during our week all came to our table to say goodbye (another tearful moment). I think this just goes to show how personal the resort feels. It is big enough to walk around( or catch a buggy!) but small enough to feel intimate. The complimentary massage was heavenly, the fishing trip exciting and the guided snorkeling breathtaking. I would recommend Oblu Select Sengeli to anyone who wants an escape where everything is taken care of for you, everyday is a dream and you leave feeling special and privileged to have been apart of it. Sangeli is like a home from home. This was our second visit, and will not be our last. The island is stunning, and we are leaving refreshed and relaxed after just one week. The one thing that makes this hotel really special are the staff and hospitality. Everyone is kind, friendly and seems genuinely happy to see you and spend time with you. The food is glorious, and will be adapted to your requests and tastes. Chef Rahul and Pramod at the Indian counter cooked us delicious food, and Chef Kamal at Just Wok created a wonderful private final dinner on the pier. The underwater wildlife is amazing. We snorkelled every day, both on trips and off the side of our villa. We saw turtles, sharks, rays and the whole cast of Finding Nemo! We had a great time at Sangeli, everything was perfect. When we arrived we were so surprised and delighted that the Water Villa we booked was upgraded to a Water Villa with Pool. The island is just the right size, easy to get to places and with enough happening. You can call a buggy to pick you up at your door which is very convenient, especially when you are hungry after a swim. Otherwise it was only a short walk to the Main Restaurant (5-10mins depending where the Villa is). The house reef coral (in front of the Sangs bar) was well maintained and attracted a lot of marine life, great for snorkelling. All staffs we met were friendly and helpful, especially the receptionist who went out of her way to help (sorry I forgot to take her name, she lend me a sarong on 9 Nov afternoon) and our housekeeper Sikdar who kept our room nice and tidy all the time and amused us with his daily towel art and birthday decoration and cake. The island was clean and tidy, the communal toilets were spotless every time, all cleaning staffs were doing a great job. The buffet restaurant has nice seating overlooking the beach. There was a good variety of food and of good quality, one of my favourites is the "live cooking station" for grilled meat and pasta. We got a fishing trip, snorkelling trip and massage session included in the package which were the highlights of our stay. With So many things included it is good value for money. You feel that you are truly being looked after at this resort. We would definitely consider to visit again. Read less
