Round Hill Hotel & Villas

Montego Bay, Jamaica

The hotel

Undoubtedly one of the most sought after hotels in the Caribbean, Round Hill Hotel & Villas has been a long-standing Jamaican icon since its opening in 1953. A former pineapple estate on the outskirts of Montego Bay, what is it about Round Hill that makes it such a magnet? Round Hill is where Jacqueline and JFK spent their honeymoon, where Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote the Sound of Music, where Hitchcock got sunburned and where Noel Coward, if egged on enough, would sing for the guests. Today, this elegant beachfront resort offers the same blend of qualities that has always pulled the famous names and faces; namely a well-preserved slice of old Jamaica and tremendous hospitality. You still enjoy the estates' stylish architecture and a predictably colonial pace of life, but with the added pull of an oceanfront spa, an exceptional family program and refurbished hotel rooms designed for beach living by Ralph Lauren, (perhaps whilst visiting his own villa at Round Hill) as so much more. The ocean side restaurant perfectly blends the hotel’s historic pedigree with its new energy.

I write this review with reluctance because this is a special property and I saw it from an unfortunate angle, but I wish I had visibility to a review like this before I booked it so I’m moving ahead. The property is astonishingly beautiful. The Jamaican people are warm and try so very hard and are so proud to be working here. But this is a property created and maintained for the Villa owners (and perhaps those who book these villas), but not for the hotel units, which are stratospherically priced and merely good. When we were brought to our room around 3 o’clock in the afternoon upon check-in, there was virtually no detail shared with us about the property or offerings, so we had a limited understanding as we were deposited in a disappointing room. (I think there should be more information given to first time guests with a general history about the place which contextualizes this beautiful property.) The position of the room looking at on the ocean is great, but the mattress is poor, there are zero drawers—and you have to unpack onto either open shelves or wicker baskets, the plumbing mechanisms and bathrooms are old, and the room described as a large oceanfront king is not very spacious. There is only one restaurant which offers varied dinners each night, but with any food limitations, the offerings are limited. The food is good, not great. Even at the lovely daily 4 PM tea, which is a beautiful ritual, the food is exactly the same each day: why not change up the cookies? For $1800 a night for just the room, I was expecting more. The prices suggest Four Seasons sensibility, and that, this is not. Had I been able to secure a one bedroom suite in one of the villas, I’m sure my experience would have been vastly different. And little things: two of the four days we were there they ran out of fresh squeezed orange juice for breakfast, (if you still have oranges how do you run out of orange juice?); the kitchen was out of cinnamon. Perhaps this is due to supply chain issues from the recent hurricane, but I think it’s just inefficient planning. RoundHill is a stunning perch to relax on the beach and the pool for a long weekend, and great for a family with small kids which seemed to be the preponderance of the guests. I spoke with the wonderful manager on our last day, and he fully appreciated my issues. Would I return? I don’t think so, but who knows? Read less

‘Welcome home’ is something everyone there will say to you around the property, and it feels real. You are family when you stay at Round Hill. The best service we have ever received at a resort!

She checked in everyday and made us feel so welcomed and our stay was made whole because of her. If you stay here which you should ask for Mickellia. Read less

Round Hill is by far the best resort vacation we have ever had. We have returned every year in February or March for 35 years. Our children grew up there and now our grandchildren are growing up there. Our daughter was married there. What makes Round Hill so special is the staff. They are just wonderful. They care deeply about Round Hill and about the guests. We have seen many of them grow up at Round Hill. We have stayed in many of the villas and they are all wonderful. Kudos also to Jose Forstmayr, who is the Managing Director and does an absolutely first rate job of running the resort. If you're considering a Caribbean vacation, Round Hill is the place to go.
