The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

Genuinely an absolutely amazing experience staying here for a little birthday staycation! From start to finish, everything was relaxing and exceeded my expectations. The check-in process and overall arrival experience were exceptional, thanks especially to Jerico, who went above and beyond to make my birthday stay feel so special. His kindness, professionalism, and attention to detail truly made all the difference. The room was spotless, luxurious, and incredibly comfortable. Any accommodations I requested were promptly taken care of, and every staff member I encountered was welcoming, friendly, and eager to help. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a stay that offers convenience, safety, outstanding service, and a touch of luxury. I can’t wait to come back! Read less

Hotel is not relaxing but is in the center of it all. I’ve stayed here twice in the past month and I find it extremely chaotic. Since it’s a Toronto icon the lobby is stressful and loud, it’s near impossible to get into the bars or lounges even if you are a guest, check in is always extremely hurried due to the volume of people. The elevators need to be operated by a key card which I do appreciate, but I saw multiple people struggling to get the keycards to work this morning and was also one of these people. Also, for whatever reason both times I’ve stayed here in the past month I’ve been tucked away at the end of the building and it kind of creeps me out. The hallways of this hotel are so vast and it feels like an odyssey trying to get to your room (plus the halls all look the same so you’ll probably go the wrong way). The rooms always feel so dark and they aren’t consistent. Last time we had a new thermostat to control the room, this time my thermostat looked like it was from the 80s. Last time I found the bed totally fine, this time I found it kind of lumpy. My biggest gripe this time is that they were pumping some type of scent into the air. I don’t normally mind this for hotels but it smelled like a combination of of cheap cologne and bug spray. I think this is a hotel you stay at if you need a central place to lay your head down and I think part of the issue is just that it is an icon so you are competing with guests and non-guests alike in public areas. I’m not sure what the answer is here because I do live in Toronto and appreciate the public areas when I am not a guest and I would hate to see it go the way of something like The Plaza in New York that’s become a historical fortress inside, but I think it needs some work to make it more modern and to define the staying guest experience vs. everyone else. Will I stay here again? Yeah probably you can’t beat the location, but I would love to see some more consistency. Read less

I was going to give a 3 star rating because the rooms and bathrooms are not of a 5 star quality. Our bathroom was small and tired with a shower in the bath and shower curtain. Bedroom got a lot of noise through the wall (from people who weren’t being unduly noisy) and was also tired. At check (6pm on a Friday) the noise /beat pulsating through the lobby meant we could hardly hear what was being said to us. But the service in Reign turned this into a 5 star review. Michelle and Kevin were outstanding. So friendly and helpful, attentive and interesting. They really made our stay. They are a real asset to the hotel. Read less

Arriving after a transatlantic flight which necessitated a very early start from home, we were delighted to arrive to the Fairmont, tired but ready to start a long planned holiday. The hotel was very busy at check in with a number of arrivals. When our turn came we approached the desk to be told our room was not ready which was reasonable as we were early. We gave my mobile phone number as we would be contacted when we could go to the room. We sat……..and sat………and sat. Back to ask, room still not available. In the meantime we were given an opportunity for an amazing upgrade to the newer part of the hotel. It sounded great but then I asked if it was extra on top of what we had paid? Yes indeed, $300 a night. We declined. As we sat, the hard sell by this man continued to others checking in but the extra cost was not foremost in the apparent “deal” offered Still waiting we adjourned to the Library Bar where the staff were consistently wonderful throughout our stay. So lovely I asked to speak to the bar manager to thank him and his team. The extensive hotel foyer had a lot of hard surfaces which meant that the pianist or piped music did not encourage lingering. The noise reverberated to the extent that the lift to our room was the only option. The room was extremely comfortable and quiet. No “upgrade” purchase needed. The hotel is very centrally located to Toronto Tower, lake cruises and many restaurants making it an excellent place to stay to explore the city. Read less

While certainly an older, classic and historic hotel, the rooms were a bit tired. Not worth the price.
