Queen Kapiolani Hotel

Honolulu, Oahu

Star rating

The hotel

Named after the beloved wife of Hawaii’s last king, Queen Kapiolani is something of a Waikiki landmark, paying homage to Hawaii’s majestic heritage and unique culture with a modern twist. Overlooking the sandiest stretch of Waikiki Beach, guests can enjoy stunning views of Diamond Head from the balconies of their newly renovated rooms, each and every one of them furnished in breezy Island style. As a change from the beach, laze beside the pool instead, dipping in every now and again to cool off. Although there are restaurants all around you, the hotel’s own Kulana is highly recommended, not just for buffet favourites but for its sweeping panoramic views! Pre-dinner, chill awhile at the Deck Pool, sipping on your favourite cocktail – a Mai Tai perhaps?

I am giving this review a rating of excellent because it was better than the next down rating of “GOOD”. Staff definitely get a rating of excellent. I was treated kindly and respectfully from the moment I arrived early to check in my baggage until I left. I honestly can’t think of a single negative or questionable interaction with staff. Housekeeping was fantastic. The restaurant was better than I expected and would have eaten there more if I didn’t realize it before my last full day of the stay. The room was very spacious for a single room single bed (king size I think). The patio was big enough to sit and not necessarily feel too cramped. As far as possible negatives, my room did show minor wear and tear, nothing at all major, I’m being really picky here, like small chips in the paint on the bathroom door and just minor things like that. All furniture and fixtures appeared to be in new shape. I had a zoo, diamond head & ocean view room. Both nice to look at, but that also put me above the pool which was loud at times (please note that I went during spring break and a large group of kids that preformed in a parade stayed there) . After 10pm it was much quieter. You will hear traffic on the diamond head side, and you will hear roosters that live near the zoo. My guess is the higher you are the less outside noise you will get . My room did have rooms perpendicular to mine, not a problem, just had to make sure blinds are down when you come out of the shower to change in the bedroom area. The rooms have both full privacy and semi transparent pull down shades for different levels of privacy or light. One note on the black out shade, they do not completely black out light like black out curtains do. I only mention this because I am a day sleeper at home and have full black out curtains. They do black out enough that I comfortably fell asleep mid day. The non positives were all very minor and would probably be the same at most hotels. . Read less

The view of the ocean and diamond Head as morning broke was amazing. Steps from the beach. There is a $40 daily parking fee and a hospitality fee.

I was not happy with this hotel at all. The bathroom has mold in there. As soon as you walk into your room the strong smell of mildew hits you. Instead of treating the mold inside the bathroom they tried to cover it up. Balcony are rusted and outdated. Staff is very sweet but the condition of the hotel rooms and bathroom is horrible. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The hotel was perfectly located in walking distance of many attractions, i. e., the zoo, Waikīkī beach, many stores and restaurants, etc. The room however was very small and is in dire need of a deep cleaning and maintenance. The carpet was stained and very dirty. The bathroom is in need of maintenance. The toilet lid did not fit the tank and moved around when I sat on the toilet. The bathtub drain was cracked around the rim, the coating was lifting and there was mold around the faucet seals. The label on the dispenser for hair conditioner had been replaced with a paper label covered with tape making it looked cheap and shoddy. Investment in a label maker would easily solve this problem. Lastly, the walls were dirty and the bathroom floor tiles were scratched and also looked dirty. My biggest issue however is being charged for my room when I needed to postpone my visit due to the severe Kona storms. I was in Maui visiting my son when travel alerts were issued to stay off the roads due to danger of flooding, falling trees, etc. Additionally my son’s home was struck by a falling tree. When I called to reschedule my arrival for a couple of days later due to the travel restrictions and a family issue, I was told I would be charged for the room as it was outside the cancellation window. Because of the severe weather conditions I feel this charge could have been waived in a gesture of good will. Nonetheless, I may stay there again as it is perfectly located for my needs. Read less
