The hotel

This all-inclusive, beachfront gem is perfectly placed on the island’s sought-after south coast, just minutes from Bridgetown, pairing postcard-worthy ocean views with one of the best locations in Barbados. Rooms are bright and breezy with garden, pool or sea views, and there’s space for everyone, from romantic escapes to laid-back family holidays. Days drift by between turquoise swims, two sparkling pools and indulgent moments at the spa. Dining is where Sugar Bay really shines. Four restaurants are included, but it’s the award-winning Asian fusion spot, Umi, that steals the show. Boho-chic style, unbeatable views, a prime south coast setting and a loyal following of returning guests - Sugar Bay Barbados is the kind of place you’ll want to come back to, too.

My husband and myself stayed at this hotel on 12 March for 2 weeks, the room we were allocated was very basic and not the one that we should have had there was no sink in the very small shower room, sink was placed around the corner of the room and opposite the wardrobes couldn’t use the shelf underneath because the toilet rolls and towels were kept there no room in n the shower room , we had to sit sideways on the toilet because our legs were touching the wall had we sat the normal way, had to bring shower door inwards there was very little room to push door , the booking form stated we would have a pool or garden view we had a jungle view from balcony,it’s a beautiful place and did not expect such a basic room, I went to reception to say that I had asked for a ground floor as he has had a heart attack in the past and was told no other rooms were available, try not n the morning , went to see tui rep following morning and she wrote it all down and never heard anymore , with no sink in shower it was not hygieneic after using the loo, I was quite shocked this place had such basic room,we were in 203 right at the end of the building. We had heard many great things about this resort before arriving but it truly exceeded all our expectations. The hotel itself is beautiful and our Ocean View Room (3 floor left side) was excellent but what really made our holiday so special was the outstanding team of staff. Every member of staff we encountered was professional, friendly and genuinely welcoming. We were especially impressed by how attentive everyone was — always taking the time to speak with guests and ensure everyone felt valued and well looked after. The team are a real credit to the resort. The high standards throughout were very noticeable particularly in the presentation of the staff. Uniforms were always immaculate and everyone looked incredibly smart, which added to the overall feeling of quality and care. The food was excellent with a wide variety of choice and beautifully presented dishes. We would also like to mention the two young gentlemen on the beach who worked tirelessly setting up umbrellas and assisting guests — their hard work and positive attitude really stood out. Housekeeping also did a fantastic job, keeping everything spotless and maintaining such a high standard of cleanliness throughout the resort. We would have no hesitation in recommending this resort to others and will definitely be sharing our positive experience to encourage others to visit. We very much hope to return again in the future. I read all the lovely reviews and wonder did we stay at the same resort? First the positives - I loved the size of this resort, the location and the 'vibe'. We were greeted with 'strong' rum punches and upgraded to beach side rooms. We were able to book our 'two' specialty restaurants, but enjoyed the buffet foods. My husband wished there was more variety, but I was very happy with the food offered. We enjoyed the entertainment each night. Overall they were fantastic, only one evening was it very loud. The Driftwood Coffee Bar was fantastic and we used it several times a day. Our room also had a walkout patio with wonderful lounge chairs and a table and chairs. Now the negatives. Our room had no bathroom door. Very uncomfortable as the bathroom fan was not the greatest, so you can imagine how this would be. Cleanliness - our room when cleaned, was never vacuumed, swept or floors washed. This became very evident as our stay progressed. Even the outdoor floors were not cleaned as we navigated around the bird droppings. And the maids would just walk in our rooms so I feel that all this was on the floors the whole time. Our comforter and blanket seemed 'dusty' I was never comfortable in our bed. My sister and her husband stayed in the room beside us and they had cockroaches. We saw the cockroaches every night in the hallways walking to and from dinner. The beds and pillows were very uncomfortable, hard. I asked for a new pillow and was told that the pillows are the same through out the resort. But magically they found a softer pillow for me. The sheets were old and were not 'hotel' quality and never changed throughout our stay despite us asking for them to be changed. One thing, personally that I did not like was that the new linens the maids had for the day were in clear bags that they just threw down on the floors. With all the cockroaches around that made me so squeamish, thinking that if they changed our bed linens would i find a cockroach in there? Air conditioning in our room was just a wall mounted unit. It was not working 100% but did make the room while sleeping comfortable enough. But it did not reach the bathroom area, so that made drying my hair like drying it in a sauna. I wished there was another mirror near an outlet so could have done it in the room. Dining room staff - Always seemed so disinterested in what they were doing. A few would chat with us but the rest just seemed like they wished they were anywhere else but there. Breakfast took forever to get coffee. They should set the breakfast table with coffee cups. They would ask if we wanted coffee, then go get the coffee cup and saucer - then ask again if we wanted coffee, then would go get it. The process took like 15 - 20 minutes just to get that first cup of coffee. Beach - As others have mentioned the saving of chairs is ridiculous. One family saved like 10 chairs and didn't show up till mid afternoon. This was annoying. We are late risers and though we always got set up - it was never where we would have loved to have been. Also all of us got bitten by what I assume were sand fleas. But we loved the proximity to the bars and beach staff were very helpful with getting umbrellas. The water was also nice, as they have created wave barriers so there is a protected area for swimming. Our Unit was 109. Read less
