The hotel

Whilst staying at Jamaica Inn, Winston Churchill swore the light was the best in the world for his watercolours. Jamaica Inn is one of the loveliest small luxury hotels in Jamaica. Now over 60 years old, it retains a gracious air of colonial Jamaica and attracts individuals and couples (some famous), who return on a regular basis. There is a wonderful, natural tranquility about this hotel and it has a lovely location on a private 700 ft white sand beach. Dining is on an outdoor terrace that adjoins the bar terrace. A more romantic setting is hard to imagine, and in keeping with the ‘Noel Coward’ lifestyle, there is a live band most nights. There is a cocktail terrace with a magnificent view and in step with its elegant classic approach, there is a dress code after dark. Bordered by an exquisite 700 ft-long beach, the hotel is in Ocho Rios on the tranquil North Coast of the island. All guest suites face the beach and the turquoise water. Each suite has a verandah or a balustraded balcony and many guests opt to leave the air-conditioning off and allow the sea breeze instead to do the work.

We were not disappointed, the location, the beach and balcony suite were perfect. The staff were all attentive and friendly with the smiles and humour that are natural to the Jamaican people. Special was our romantic anniversary dinner alone on the beach. Only negative was we felt that the lunch and dinner menus had limited choices. However the food served was well cooked and presented. Jamaica Inn has not changed in terms of its basic ethos, warm welcome and excellent service over the many years we have been going. The large number of repeat guests testifies to its charm, friendliness, beautiful beach and excellent food - far better than we’ve experienced in most hotels. Complimentary rum or fruit punch is offered every day on the beach, followed by complimentary tea in the afternoon. At a time when some hotels are cutting back on this sort of thing, it is particularly to the credit of Jamaica Inn’s management that they still feel that it is important to offer these touches and it is much appreciated by guests. The menu at the main restaurant changes nightly and is always delicious and for those looking for a less formal setting there’s Teddy’s on the beach. The hotel is small enough to ensure that staff quickly get to know guests but never feels cramped even when full. The beach really is delightful - a beautiful deep crescent shape with sun loungers and umbrellas dotted around - no rows of them as you get in so many hotels. The staff call the hotel a home from home and it seems that it really does feel like that to guests, an atmosphere created by the genuinely warm staff and by resident black labrador, Shadow. We have been five times over a number of years and will undoubtedly go again. Read less

The service here is personalized and its intentional. You feel welcome and the experience is attentive but not intrusive. The wait staff, managers, the food, the spa, the beach views and the facilities are exquisite. I did not get the touristy, rowdy crowd vibe here. Everything is gentle (the pace, the activities, the ambience). What a gem! Read less

My husband and I just spent eight nights in a Premier Verandah Suite at Jamaica Inn. The west wing rooms are directly over the water and we witnessed stunning sunsets and fed toast crumbs to tropical fish each morning. We had our honeymoon there in 1977 and have been repeat guests ever since. We love to travel, but the Inn always calls us "back home." There is nothing quite like this property. It's truly the only place I can totally relax, take an afternoon nap on the beach and wake up with the birds ready to enjoy my Blue Mountain coffee and banana bread. The property is small, genteel, timeless, elegant, but never stuffy. If you want loud music, televisions and a wild, party atmosphere, this isn't for you. Guests come here to unwind, bask in the sunshine, smell the sea, recharge and be pampered. The private beach is gorgeous and it's raked to perfection every morning. There are more than enough loungers and natural umbrellas to accommodate every guest. The lush grounds with palm trees and flowers are tended to by gardeners every day. They will even take you on a garden tour to learn about the native vegetation. Most of the common areas are in the open air. Storied hotel history whispers in every corner and it's been privately owned by the same family for over 75 years. Not a corporate or chain bone in its body. But what makes us keep coming back year after year is the entire staff. Many have been there for decades and have become like family. Reservations, the front desk, guest services, maintenance, cooks, (the soups are my favorite), housekeeping, bartenders, wait staff, chefs, pastry chefs (the breads are all homemade and the desserts are a work of art), the laundry, lifeguards, gardeners, managers, and drivers all work as a team flawlessly. You can mingle with other guests at the beach bar and play croquet, or just relax on your own. Enjoy a rum Planter's Punch on the beach promptly every morning at 11:00 and pretend you're a pirate. Eat lunch on the beach at Teddy's Bar and Grill, enjoy cocktails and live music nightly at dinner and maybe even get out on the dance floor. Have a massage at the award-winning spa inhaling lemongrass while listening to the waves. When you retreat to your room for the evening, your bed will be turned down, fresh towels will be hung and a cookie jar on the nightstand will hold a treat so you will have the sweetest dreams. Pure Bliss! Before you leave, you will be planning your next visit. Trust me. Read less
