The hotel

A local landmark with a legendary story, Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth was the setting for John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s famous bed-in for peace in 1969 – and is where Lennon wrote and recorded Give Peace a Chance. Today, it’s still inspiring guests, thanks to a huge revamp in 2017 that’s transformed social spaces like the wellness centre and sleek indoor pool, and its dining venues, including the elegant Rosélys restaurant, sophisticated Nacarat cocktail bar, and cool contemporary coffee hangout, Kréma. And it’s kept its progressive and creative edge at its urban market, Artisans, where local purveyors and gourmet geniuses share their culinary creations.

As repeat guests of the brand across four other Canadian cities, and having stayed at the Fairmont Reine Elizabeth twice in the past two years, it feels slightly uncomfortable to leave a critical review. To start with the positives, the staff throughout the hotel were excellent. Front desk, concierge, housekeeping, doormen, and the teams at Roselys and Marché Artisans were welcoming, professional, and clearly hardworking. The hotel is also extremely well located, making it easy to explore the city on foot or via public transport. Unfortunately, the room itself fell well below the standard suggested by the rest of the property. While clean and offering a pleasant city view, the room felt tired and overdue for refurbishment. Furniture was worn and dated, and paintwork and plaster around the window reveals were peeling or damaged. The shower was a good size, but the combined toilet and basin area was cramped, and the toilet fixture moved during normal use. The adjoining (locked) door to the neighbouring room also allowed significant noise transfer, meaning we were listening to energetic neighbours late at night and again early in the morning. Taken together, the room felt noticeably out of step with the quality of the hotel’s public spaces and service. For the rate charged, the accommodation simply did not represent the level of comfort or value we have experienced at other Fairmont properties or Le Reine previously. A disappointing stay in what is otherwise an impressive hotel. Given the strength of the staff and the location, it is surprising that some rooms appear to fall so far behind the otherwise high standards of the property. Read less

We came on a winter break to Montreal and Quebec. This hotel was perfectly located for a first time, short stay visitor. 5 minutes walk past the winter ice rink to downtown and the time out market for food and drink, and shopping, if you are that way inclined. As it was winter, we took the hotel lift to the railway station and the underground maze of the subway system to walk to Notre Dame and the Old Port. We took the train from Montreal to Quebec, so to be able to go down to the train station from the hotel was excellent. We made use of the bar Nacarat at the hotel. A very pleasant bar where the staff were very courteous and attentive. The rooms were very comfortable. We overlooked the church but with the snow, the church , the office lights . We were more than happy. Read less

A few days before our stay I came in person because we were not sure yet if we would be able to keep the same dates and I simply wanted to know what the options were in case we needed to move them. That is when I spoke with Pascal at the front desk. He was extremely respectful, clear and genuinely helpful and gave me the information in a very professional way. Later on when we called we were given completely different information by the supervisor Katie which is where the confusion started because the two versions had nothing to do with each other. We had already packed to come spend Valentine’s night at the hotel so when we showed up at the desk our only intention was to calmly understand the situation since we were already there for our stay. We were obviously not asking for anything at that point just a simple clarification. Unfortunately from the beginning Katie went straight on the defensive became visibly nervous raised the tone and kept repeating that she felt attacked. Every time we tried to speak she would say we were interrupting while she continued the same prepared speech without actually listening to what we were saying. It did not feel like a conversation at all but more like she had decided the outcome and there was no space for any real exchange. She then ended the discussion on her own instead of allowing a calm and respectful dialogue. Right after that she went to the back and started sending messages through another employee to the person who was serving us asking him to come see her immediately after finishing with us which created a very uncomfortable and tense atmosphere at the front desk for no reason. The hotel itself is beautiful and every other staff member we interacted with was kind professional and exactly what you would expect from a place like this which is why this situation stands out so much. We’re honestly thinking about extending our stay. The staff are incredibly kind and welcoming, the hotel is very clean and comfortable, and the restaurants are excellent. We had some of the best food in Montreal right here at the hotel. Everything has been perfect so far, and we would absolutely stay here again. Highly recommended! Ali rashidian Read less

Stayed at this hotel for two nights in December as part of a tour group. We had stayed in another historical Fairmont Hotel before and this is a more modern facility. The lobby and common areas were decorated for Christmas and we enjoyed the market. Found out that this is the hotel where John and Yoko had their "bed in" for world peace. The gym was well equipped and relatively quiet when I went at night. The hotel is right above the major train station and also connects to the underground city. Room was clean and quiet. Our group had the daily breakfast buffet in the restaurant and that was nice too -- especially for those who partook of the omelet station. We got out and walked around a bit, both above and underground. Nice stay for our tour group before catching the train to Quebec City. Read less
