Meritage Resort and Spa

Napa, Napa Valley Wine Region

Star rating

The hotel

You know you’ve reached wine country when you arrive at Meritage Resort & Spa. On the threshold of Napa Valley, its design may be Tuscan-inspired, but its soul is pure Napa, with views of a grapevine-covered slope as you swim, hiking (or strolling) trails through nine acres of vineyards, an underground tasting room, and wine served at every turn. But it’s also a place that recognises exceptional wine should be paired with life’s other luxuries: separate adult and family pools, al fresco fireplaces and whirlpools, lazy Sunday brunches, and wining and dining venues like award-winning Siena, the Crush bowling lounge, a café-come-gelateria, and a luxury wine bar. But it’s the Estate Cave that promises the most indulgence; 40 ft underground, it hosts a wine tasting room and Spa Terra’s steam grottos and soaking pools.

We'd been looking forward to this trip all spring break with our two toddlers and a baby. It had great reviews on Tripadvisor and was part of Amex’s Hotel Collection. We heard the Meritage was great for families. So, we booked a one-bedroom suite. We checked in to find food still in the fridge from the previous guests, and later discovered a broken electrical prong stuck in an outlet — not something you want to find with two toddlers running around. The mattress sagged badly on one side, and the provided crib turned out to be a pack-and-play with a flat sheet tucked in, which isn't safe for a baby, so we didn't use it. Thankfully we'd brought our own as a backup. Not a great start, but we tossed the food ourselves and the engineer came to fix the outlet issue. The family pool was a hit with the kids, so we decided to make the best of it. Then on the second evening, the AC/heat broke. The room swung between super cold and hot. Engineering came out twice that evening, couldn't fix it, and told us someone would follow up in the morning to fix it. With the temperature so erratic, all three kids were up multiple times through the night, coughing, which was miserable for a family vacation. Nobody came in the morning. That was honestly the last straw for us and we wanted to go home. We spoke with the manager on site who was sympathetic and said we could check out early and promised a full refund for the remaining nights we were’t staying. We appreciated that and checked out feeling like at least the situation had been handled. It wasn't. We received only 50% back for the remaining nights so far. Following up has been a hassle in itself — option 3 on their line leads to an error, and after working through several extensions to reach someone, we were finally able to leave a message. We're waiting to hear back. I don't write negative reviews lightly, and I can usually let the small things go. But this has been genuinely frustrating. We just want the refund we were promised for the nights we didn’t stay. We really wanted to love this place, and maybe with some fixes it could live up to its reputation. But until they sort out the basics, we can't recommend it for families. A resort should be relaxing. This was anything but. Read less

We got a deal via travelzoo, a few days before our arrival we were told check in would be across the street. I thought nothing of it but once I arrived I found out that the check in area had been temporarily relocated as one half of the resort was bought out by a corporation and we were not able to access that whole section of the resort! As a way to make it up they provided us a $100 resort credit but the places it could be used at were very limited. Additionally, our purchased deal came with a daily breakfast credit and resort credit. The breakfast credit had to be used by 11 am. I was so disappointed that I was not able to use my breakfast credits at blend cafe. We asked the front desk if we could extend our stay by one day and in this way access the section of the resort that had been closed off (the buy out was to end on the day of our checkout), additionally I asked if they could honor the promotional price I had paid via travel zoo and the best they could do was $100 off, give me a break. Needless to say we did not extend our stay. They seem a bit disorganized overall. Read less

I recently stayed at Meritage Resort and Spa for a business trip, though I’ve also stayed here before for leisure and always enjoy the resort. The rooms are spacious and very clean. Ours included a fridge with daily bottled waters, a Nespresso maker with cream and sugar, robes, a large bathroom, and a big balcony with beautiful views. It’s a very comfortable place to stay whether you're working or relaxing. The bowling at Crush Lounge is a lot of fun. They serve great food and have lane service so someone will bring drinks right to you while you bowl, which makes it a great evening activity. We also ate at Olive & Hay for both breakfast and dinner. Both meals were excellent, with fast service and really good food. The steakhouse, Ember Steak, is also fantastic—the cocktails were well crafted and the steak was cooked perfectly. The pool and hot tub area are very nice. On this visit there wasn’t poolside food and beverage service, though I’m guessing that may be seasonal. One of the best things about this resort is that once you arrive, you really don’t need to leave. There’s a small store, several restaurant options, wine tasting, bowling, and both a family pool and a 21+ adults-only pool. Overall, it’s a great place to stay for either business or a relaxing getaway in Napa. Read less

Overall nice hotel and experience with Amex perks. Rating it with 3 stars because housekeeping did a poor job. When we first arrived, trash was left in the suite. We called the front desk to have the trash removed, and after 3 hours, no one came to get the trash. We placed the trash in the hotel hallway because it was sinking up the kitchen area (pizza boxes and beers), and the trash remained in the hallway until 10am the next morning. For the price, we expected a higher level of cleanliness. Read less

Did not get the room I had reserved and nothing was mentioned about it, otherwise would give it another try. Was told I would get a text when room was ready, which I never did.
