The hotel

Tucked away in a quiet residential area, the Mondrian South Beach offers the perfect mix of home-like comfort and luxurious hotel service. This all-suite hotel is a stunning example of Modernist architecture, with interiors designed by the bold and innovative Marcel Wanders. The post-Minimalist style features a sophisticated palette of gold, black, and white, with an emphasis on sensual comfort both indoors and out. The pool area is a showstopper, surrounded by sun-soaked lounge pillows and winding pathways that lead to hidden seating areas. With views of Biscayne Bay and the Miami skyline, the scene feels like it’s straight out of CSI Miami. And because the hotel faces west, you’ll enjoy spectacular sunsets—best savored with a mojito from the bayside or private rooftop bar.

Had I not been called the "n" word, I probably would not have even given this energy. But here we are. I visited the Mondrian South Beach to celebrate three years of being cancer free with friends who flew in from different cities for this milestone. Between the beach club and our room, I spent nearly $3,000 at this property. I want to be clear about that number because it is important context for everything that follows. I will start with the positives because they deserve to be acknowledged. The beach club staff was warm, attentive, and made our afternoon genuinely enjoyable. The agent who checked me in upon arrival was kind and professional. This review is not about them. The issues began when I went to check into Room 801 around 5:00 PM. The room had not been cleaned. I am not referring to minor oversights. There was visible mold, insects in the corners of the room, and stains on both the bedsheets and the couch. I have time stamped photos of everything and have attached them to this review for reference. I returned to the front desk calmly and respectfully. No raised voice. No scene. I simply let them know the condition of the room and requested to speak with management because I no longer felt comfortable staying on the property. That is a completely reasonable response from any paying guest. What happened next is the reason I am writing this review. The front desk staff began speaking Spanish among themselves. What they did not anticipate is that I am fully fluent in Spanish. I heard every word. The conversation was not just dismissive. It was racially charged. I was referred to using the "n" word by staff members at a property where I had just spent nearly $3,000. I composed myself and asked again to speak with the manager. Sebastian Garcia came out and rather than addressing the conduct of his staff or offering any form of resolution, he was dismissive and treated me as though I was the problem. Not one apology. Not one acknowledgment of what had just occurred. Shortly after I went upstairs to collect my belongings, security was sent to escort my entire party off the property. We were removed like we did not belong there after spending nearly three thousand dollars and doing nothing more than advocating for ourselves as guests. I want to be transparent. Had the room been dirty and the staff handled my concern with basic professionalism, I would have moved on. Mistakes happen. But being called a racial slur, dismissed by management, and escorted off the property on a trip I planned to celebrate surviving cancer is not something I am willing to let go unaddressed. The sunset from the beach club is everything I hoped it would be. The people, unfortunately, are not. If you are considering booking here, please take my experience into account. Every guest regardless of background deserves to be treated with dignity and basic respect. That standard was not met here and based on how management handled this situation, I have serious concerns about whether it will be going forward. Mondrian South Beach, I genuinely hope your leadership takes a hard look at the culture being represented at your front desk. Your guests deserve better than this. Read less
