I recently stayed at Southern Palms for 2 nights with my friend who was celebrating her birthday and we both had such a great time. From check in to check out was a great service. The room was clean on arrival. The only issue was the shower - when turned on it makes a constant ringing noise but it wasn’t too overbearing. We had breakfast included in our stay and the service in the restaurant was so good. There was a set menu for our breakfast-included stay, not a huge variety but still good. With that said, the restaurant staff were very accommodating to me. I don’t eat eggs and I was able to substitute that with something else and I really appreciated that. Service by the pool area by KEN was the best. He was very engaging and made sure me and my friend were all set for the day. He found us 2 pool chairs to use for the day and made sure we were comfortable. If you’re the type who likes to sit by the pool, I suggest waking up early and reserving the chairs. They’re all gone by 9am or so. He also set up lunch for us on the beach which was also very nice. The service was great and all the staff were amazing. I can’t remember everyone’s names but I must give a special thank you to Ken at the pool, Kelly(?) I think lol she’s the manager or supervisor by the restaurant, Shirley and Coreen who were our waitresses at breakfast and dinner and Jenni at the front desk. I highly recommend Southern Palms for your vacation/staycation. I look forward to returning here again! Read less

It was strange being back in the old carriages, l remember them well. The train left on time, quite a short journey. Alighting at Corfe Castle we walked up through the little town to the castle and visited the model village and tea shop. It is not very large and steps a bit uneven, but l managed to get around it easily, followed by a cuppa. You can walk up to the castle, but the ground uneven, so didn't attempt it. As it's NT, you pay if not a member. Coming back l needed to be on the other side of the track, not able to do stairs very well, the staff took me across the line, to board the rain back to Swanage. Well worth a visit. Read less

My husband and I spent our first holiday to Barbados at the Southern Palms. Whilst the room (318) was a wee bit dated, it was perfectly adequate for our needs with a lovely big terrace with a partial sea view. The bed was comfortable, there was plenty of wardrobe space, but a few more hangers would be useful. There was maid service every day, although I'm not sure how much more than wiping around the bathroom and making the bed they did. There were dirt marks under the bathroom sink that were there for the 2 weeks we were in the room. Maybe it was the marks from the mop! The pool area was spotless with around 14-16 sunbeds at the main pool, with one parasol per two beds. Unfortunately, this meant claiming a pair of beds early or there were none left. There were also a number of hotel sunbeds available on the beach and we did make use of them on a couple of occasions. The only issue with this is that the palm trees then need to be used for shade as there are no hotel parasols on the beach. There was some maintenance work being done on the main restaurant roof which caused some noise but was not overbearing, and we'd been made aware of it the week before by British Airways Holidays. The Reception Staff were helpful and very pleasant, on one occasion, however, my husband questioned the bill and the staff member was a bit rude. The hotel had happy hour every evening from 6.00-7.00 pm, 2 for one on selected cocktails. Oh my goodness, service was slow. Not just everyday Bajan slow, way slower than that. If you don't want customers to make use of Happy Hour, then don't have it. It was difficult to get more than one order of drinks in the 60 minutes. Keep in mind we were there in September and the hotel most definitely was not busy. Whilst this was frustrating, at least the bar staff were relatively pleasant. Water bottles could be filled throughout the day at the bar which was extremely useful (Barbados tap water is delicious). We ate in the restaurant once, for their lobster special. $85 bbd per person, we were not impressed by the meal, it wasn't badly cooked, but portion size for the cost was disappointing. We didn't eat in the hotel again after this. We didn't catch much of the entertainment, we watched a bit of the steel band one night and singers another night, I'm not sure if there was anything else on during our stay. The bar seemed to close early for a hotel bar, most nights by 10.30, so coming back in from a meal etc there was no option for a night cap, this may have been due to the time of year. The location of the hotel is excellent with nice restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. I would suggest it would be helpful for customers staying on a room only basis if some cutlery and dishes were supplied, not quite self-catering but helpful to have. All in all we had a fabulous holiday and would definitely return to Barbados and quite possibly to Southern Palms. Read less

After having a wonderful holiday last year we rebooked directly with the hotel to go again. Whilst we still enjoyed the beach front location, general ambience of the hotel, and the service from most of the staff, we were somewhat upset that no one had contacted us from reservations regarding the works to the restaurant, which carried on each day, including weekends, and as our ocean view room was just across the way caused us some disturbance. Those that had rooms further from the pool/restaurant to be fair probably did not suffer the same noise. When we arrived we received notice in the form of a letter stating that the works were being carried out and unlike other guests who had booked vis tour operators this was the first we heard of it. Now don’t get me wrong the maintenance was absolutely necessary to ensure the structure was sound, but it was particularly galling that others who had booked via tour operators had in some instances, the opportunity to change hotels, and had done so, whether we would have done remains an open question. Booking directly we had the right to cancel our stay up to 7 days beforehand without penalty, you can call me cynical but was this a ploy by the hotel not to lose the booking, because at the time there was availability with many other hotels on the Island. We got a complimentary cocktail and was told by the Management that they would look into the reason we hadn’t been informed and heard nothing more, that just about says it all. We won’t be staying again and a word of warning to others DO NOT BOOK DIRECT as it seems the tour operators have a better attitude towards customer service. Read less
