There’s plenty here for non-skiers too. The town of Mammoth Lakes serves up an international foodie scene, craft breweries, cosy après-style bars and a lively local buzz, so you can go from mountain trails to margaritas, noodles, tacos or a fresh local brew without missing a beat. In summer, swap skis for hiking boots, bikes, paddle boards, kayaks, horseback rides and scenic golf, with lakes, forest trails and mountain views doing most of the showing off. Mammoth also makes a brilliant alternative base for Yosemite National Park. The eastern entrance via Tioga Pass is around 45 minutes from Mammoth Lakes, when the road is open, giving you access to Yosemite’s high-country drama without staying in the busier west-side gateways. Tioga Road is typically open to vehicles from late May or June until sometime in November, although dates depend on snow conditions, so it is always worth checking before travelling.

Drive time to Mammoth Lakes

Important seasonal note: State Route 120 through Tioga Pass to and from Yosemite National Park is usually closed from around early November to late May, depending on snow conditions. When Tioga Pass is closed, the drive from San Francisco to Mammoth Lakes is longer, around 7 hours and 385 miles. Yosemite’s National Park Service confirms Tioga Road is typically open from late May or June until sometime in November, subject to annual conditions.

          • Take the scenic gondola towards Mammoth Mountain’s 11,000ft summit for sweeping Sierra views and summit selfies. In summer, adventurous travellers can stretch their legs with a hike back down the mountain afterwards.

            • Spend easy days hiking alpine trails, cycling scenic pathways, horse riding, paddle boarding, kayaking or playing golf with Sierra views. Mammoth Lakes makes getting outside feel effortless, sunny and wildly scenic all year.

              Mono Lake tufa towers

                • When Tioga Pass is open, drive to Yosemite’s eastern gate for Tuolumne Meadows, giant sequoia groves, Bridalveil Fall, Yosemite Falls and El Capitan, with big drama in every direction along the way too.

                  Bodie ghost town park

                  • Step into California’s Gold Rush story at Bodie, a preserved ghost town about an hour from Mammoth Lakes. Weathered buildings, dusty streets and an eerie, stopped-in-time atmosphere make it a standout day trip.
