Good to know before you go

New roads, new rules, new reasons to pull over for the view. Before you set off, we’ve gathered a few useful driving tips for the USA and Canada, covering the practical bits like tolls, age requirements, local road rules and what to watch for along the way.

So you can spend less time wondering, and more time enjoying the drive.

  1. Right on red (Yes, really)

    You can usually turn right at red lights after stopping, unless you see a sign saying not to. It’s a little different to the UK, but very common in the US.

  2. Automatic & Petrol-Powered

    Most hire cars in the US are automatic and run on petrol (gasoline). You’ll rarely find a manual, and diesel cars are uncommon.

  3. Miles, not kilometres

    Speed limits and distances are in miles/mph, so plan accordingly when estimating travel time.

  4. Stop signs

    Everyone stops. Then everyone stares. First to arrive goes first. If it’s a tie, yield to the right. Trust the process.

  5. Toll roads

    Some highways are tolled, so you'll be charged. If you're travelling in Florida and will be driving a lot, see if you can purchase a Visitor Toll Pass in advance to save you some dollars for your donuts.

  6. Drivers age

    Usually 20+ (18 in NY and Michigan). If you’re under 25, expect a young driver fee, unless your package has it already included.

  7. Extras & add-ons

    Child-seats, full tank of fuel, GPS? We got you covered. You can add all of these on as extras, but we do offer packages with these inclusions already, so make sure to select the package that suits your needs best.

  8. Deposits & payents

    refundable deposit (typically $200–$500 USD) is held on your credit card when you collect your car. A credit card in the lead driver's name is required.
